Today’s Report From South Of Town is not going to be filled with my usual antics. As a matter of fact, it will be rather depressing but, please read on and indulge me. My heart is as heavy as it has been in many years. Tonight, I received news that my close friend and SCUBA Diving mentor, Bill White is in a hospital in Houston with only a few days to live. I knew he had cancer and was not doing well when I left for here but, I was unable to accept the fact that he wasn’t invincible. Bill owned Sport Divers in Webster, Texas (Very close to NASA) for many years. Bill and I dove the Texas coast and the Caymans together and he taught me how to discover the beauty of the undersea world safely and how to take only memories and leave only bubbles. I was a clumsy one man wrecking crew when I first started diving and Bill was patient enough to explain the delicate nature of things and how to optimize buoyancy control so others may see what I saw after I move on. He is the diver I’d like to most be like and I have diligently tried for many years.

As I have written before in this board, I am not a religious person. But, tonight I am asking God to forgive me for not being better at speaking to him as I pray to God that he make Bill whole again so I might show him Xcalak and Portillas in person. Additionally, I am asking any of you who read this to pray for Bill with me. I do not wish to post that I have only memories of Bill remaining. May God bless my friend and mentor so we may share blowing bubbles again.
